House Speaker Greg Stumbo files lawsuit over Gov. Bevin's vetoes

FRANKFORT – Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in Franklin Circuit Court looking to the court for clarity on whether Gov. Matt Bevin’s recent vetoes, and another bill he signed into law, were done properly. The lawsuit focuses on the vetoes of House bills approved on April 15, including the state’s upcoming two-year budget, and the passage of Senate Bill 296, which the governor signed into law even though it had not been properly delivered to... Read more

LOUISVILLE – The Black United Press Political Candidates Forum took place Tuesday night in West Louisville with longtime incumbent Sen. Gerald Neal, D-Louisville, absent. The two other Democratic candidates, former legislative and political aide Charles Booker, and retired Jefferson County District Judge Toni Stringer, along with Republican John Yuen were at the event which was attended by close to 100 voters. $4.5 million sent from Office of Attorney General to Ky. State Police for future rape kit testing; Backlog kits still wait testing

FRANKFORT — With the push of a button the Office of the Attorney General transferred $4.5 million in settlement funds to the Kentucky State Police in an effort to ensure justice for rape victims. The fund transfer is meant to ensure invasive sexual assault forensic kits are tested in a timely fashion, but as the dollars head to the crime lab there remain thousands of untested kits still sitting on shelves and in boxes in the commonwealth. TV ads in 31st Senate District getting personal as "cozy" relationships, delinquent taxes follow coal spots

First, there were ads on coal and who does and doesn’t support the proverbial War on Coal. Now, the race for the 31st Senate District has taken a more personal bend, with television ads questioning Senate Minority Floor Leader Ray Jones’ relationship with a local utility operator and bounced checks written by challenger Glenn Martin Hammond intended to cover occupational taxes for his Pikeville law firm. Kevin E. Moore will join Actors Theatre of Louisville as managing director this summer, in advance of the Tony Award-winning theater’s 53rd season. The appointment was announced Wednesday. Moore, who for the past six years has been the managing director of Theatre Communications Group in New York City, will replace Jennifer Bielstein. Four Republicans are vying to be the chosen “Washington outsider” in the primary race for U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield’s Western Kentucky district, which he has represented in Congress since 1994. But it appears the real horse race is between just two. After losing to now-Gov. Matt Bevin in last year’s primary race, former Agriculture Commissioner James Comer has the financial edge despite an early fundraising lead by Mike Pape, Whitfield’s longtime district director. Also running are Hickman County Attorney Jason Batts and Trigg County farmer Miles Caughey. House Speaker Greg Stumbo is suing Gov. Matt Bevin, saying that he improperly vetoed several bills passed during this year’s legislative session. Stumbo, a Democrat from Prestonsburg, questioned the validity of vetoes to six bills, including line-item vetoes to the state budget, which he says were improperly delivered and signed. He also says Bevin violated the constitution by not including “veto messages” that explain the rationale for several line-item vetoes to the state budget. Related Story [...]
