Even with Grimes expected to cruise to nomination, Democrats say she has something to prove

05/19/2014 07:08 PM
While most of the attention in the U.S. Senate race will be focused on the Republicans in Tuesday’s primary, Democrats say Alison Lundergan Grimes can make a statement with overwhelming support. Former Gov. Martha Layne Collins, speaking at a pre-primary campaign stop for Grimes, urged Democratic supporters to get out the vote for Grimes to show how united Democrats are in their bid to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell. McConnell is clearly looking past Tuesday’s primary to Grimes as... Read more

05/19/2014 03:30 PM
The phones are ringing off the hook in the homes of Republican voters in Adair County as GOP surrogates make one last pitch for their candidates in the 16th state Senate District. Republican Rep. Bam Carney of Campbellsville had been helping challenger Max Wise behinds the scenes but publicly endorsed Wise on Monday, including with a robocall in Adair and Taylor counties. “I’ve known him for years and can personally attest to his character and conservative principles,” Carney says in... Read more

Even on last day before primary, McConnell sticks to influence message but doesn't take questions

05/19/2014 11:38 AM
LOUISVILLE — Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is ending his primary campaign with a familiar theme: outlining a message that hammers on his influence and then moving on to the next stop without taking questions from reporters. McConnell embarked on a seven-city fly-around on Monday, the day before the primary election. McConnell started his day in Louisville with his wife and former secretary of labor Elaine Chao. Both McConnell and Chao focused their messages on the importance of influence, and how... Read more

Different focuses, not factions, separate 32nd House District candidates Moffett and May

05/18/2014 01:12 PM
The two Republican candidates in an open House seat in Louisville might have different factions of support but have spent most of their efforts trying to steer the conversations on porch stoops to issues and experience rather than labels. Phil Moffett, who fostered tea party support in his bid for the 2011 GOP nomination for governor, faces Shellie May, who spent more than three years as Jefferson County Republican Party chairman. Both May and Moffett have downplayed the tea party... Read more

By the numbers: How and where Ky. GOP voters turn out in recent U.S. Senate primaries

05/17/2014 05:29 PM
Now that the time before the May 20 primary is being counted down in hours instead of days, the focus is now squarely on Tuesday’s turnout. And if Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes’ estimate of less than 30 percent turnout is correct, somewhere between 300,000 and 350,000 of the 1,196,183 Republicans will come out to vote. But two of the last three election cycles in which incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has been on the ballot have been... Read more

By Jack Brammer jbrammer@herald-leader.com FRANKFORT — The University of Kentucky will receive a $1.5 million, two-year grant from the state to develop a plan to prevent and treat substance abuse by adolescents. Adolescent substance abuse is at “epidemic proportions,” Conway said. He noted that a 2011 study from the Centers for Disease Control showed that 66 percent of Kentucky kids have used [...]

By Jack Brammer jbrammer@herald-leader.com FRANKFORT – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Matt Bevin stopped short Friday of pledging his support for his party’s nominee after Tuesday’s primary election but he said he has never supported a Democrat over a Republican. “I see no chance of that starting any time in the foreseeable future, including in this race,” Bevin told reporters during a campaign bus stop Friday at the state Capitol.
