Same-sex marriage plaintiffs confident ahead of Supreme Court hearing this month

Plaintiffs in what will be a landmark decision on same-sex marriage by the U.S. Supreme Court are optimistic that the high court will overturn laws barring the unions throughout the country later this year. Six couples are fighting Kentucky’s constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, joining similar legal battles in Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee before the Supreme Court April 28. Former Rep. Ben Waide pleads guilty to campaign finance violations

Former Republican state Rep. Ben Waide pleaded guilty on Friday for attempting to accept illegal campaign contributions and attempted unlawful campaign expenditures in Franklin Circuit Court. Waide, of Madisonville, received a 12-month jail sentence, though he won’t see the inside of a correctional facility thanks to a probated sentence with two years of supervision, the Attorney General’s Office said in a news release. General Fund receipts hitting "substantial momentum" ahead of final quarter in FY15

General Fund tax receipts are gaining steam as the 2015 fiscal year nears its final quarter, growing 4.8 percent in March compared to last year, State Budget Director Jane Driskell announced in a news release Friday. Tax revenues totaled $789.9 million in March, up from $753.5 million last March, according to the release. Receipts have increased 4.1 percent in the first nine months of the fiscal year, meaning the General Fund’s tax collections must improve 2.2 percent in the final quarter... Read more

A retired southern Indiana sheriff will pay $4,000 in fines and serve two years’ probation after admitting he lied to federal investigators about his relationship with a prostitute. U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt imposed the sentence on former Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden as part of a plea agreement Monday. The News and Tribune reports Rodden pleaded guilty to two counts of making false statements to federal investigators. Five other counts were dismissed. Simmons College of Kentucky Louisville’s Simmons College of Kentucky has been officially designated as a Historically Black College and University, or HBCU. The announcement, made today via Twitter by college President Kevin Cosby, makes Simmons College the second HBCU in Kentucky; Kentucky State University in Frankfort is the other. Simmons College is a private biblical college that was founded in Louisville in 1879. The college was accredited last year by the Association for Biblical Education, and once accredited, it was eligible to apply to be an HBCU.
