The U.S. Army’s plans to reduce troop levels by 40,000 service members in the next two-years may not impact Kentucky, but the commonwealth’s federal delegation is still expressing concerns over what the draw back will do to American military might. As Army bases around the nation announce the cuts Fort Knox will actually gain 67 troops in the announced plans, while Fort Campbell is expecting to cut 350 troops by 2017. FRANKFORT – Fifty-seven county clerks form every region of the commonwealth sent a formal letter to Gov. Steve Beshear on Wednesday requesting that he immediately call for a special session of the General Assembly to address issues relating to issuing same-sex marriage licenses. Updated: Fort Knox will add 67 troops over the next two-years as the Army draws back their service members nationally, according to multiple media outlets. Fort Campbell will cut 350 troops over the next two-years, as worst case scenarios could have been as high as 16,000 troops. Kentuckians living in the Appalachian region are at higher risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer than other U.S. residents, according to a recent study. The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, lists 60 counties in Kentucky as hotspots for colorectal cancer. The high risk counties are primarily located in northeastern Kentucky. The counties include Ballard, Elliott, McCracken, Bullitt, Clay and Shelby. State officials won’t disclose the names or locations of Kentucky grocery stores accused of fraud in the Women, Infants and Children food assistance program. Citing a U.S Department of Agriculture regulation, the state Health and Family Services Cabinet restricts the disclosure of businesses that violate the WIC program’s rules even though the names of customers who make fraudulent purchases using WIC money become public record.
