Proposed legislation filed to allow clergy to not perform gay marriage in Kentucky

FLORENCE – A northern Kentucky legislator has pre-filed a bill which would make it clear that clergy who object to same-sex marriage for religious reasons would not be forced to perform such services. Rep. House and Senate Democrats working to extend DUI look-back period

Lawmakers in the House and Senate are working on mirror legislation to extend the current DUI look-back period from 5 to 10 years. Sen. Dennis Parrett, D-Elizabethtown, and Rep. Kelly Flood, D-Lexington, are renewing the call for tougher DUI laws in memory of individuals in their respective districts. Parrett introduced and passed legislation out of the state Senate in the 2015 legislative session, but the House never heard the bill in committee due to concerns over costs. President Barack Obama’s plan to expand overtime pay may not have passed Congress on its own, but Kentucky’s lone Democrat in Washington believes lawmakers were better equipped to examine the issue and enact resolutions. Obama announced Tuesday that the Labor Department will grant overtime benefits to salaried workers making up to $50,440 annually, an increase from the Federal Labor Standards Act’s current threshold of $23,660 per year. Louisville Metro Police says investigators believe they have recovered the body of one of the three people who remain missing after a pontoon boat capsized in the Ohio River over the weekend. Police say a family walking along the river near the Falls of the Ohio Monday night found the body and called authorities. Capt. Joel DeMoss tells TV station WLKY authorities believe it was likely a man involved in the accident. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jack Arnold says he expects to identify the victim by Tuesday. Louisville firefighters will monitor through the night three historic Whiskey Row buildings that were extensively damaged by fire Monday afternoon. As of Monday evening, firefighters were still working to extinguish flames burning through a stretch of a historic Whiskey Row buildings in downtown Louisville. A Louisville Fire spokesman said the three-alarm fire was dwindling but not yet entirely under control. “We’re keeping it in check from spreading to any other buildings. Right now it’s contained,” said Capt. Sal Melendez, the Louisville Fire spokesman. He said crews are “very hopeful” the facades of the structures can at least be saved. Cory Trenholm kept his eyes on the water Monday morning, steering a rescue boat to dodging debris on the Ohio River. Trentholm, 29, is an eight-year veteran of the Louisville Fire Department and part of the search effort hoping to recover three people still missing after their rented pontoon boat rammed a construction staging barge Saturday night, sending them into the river. Two died in the accident and four others aboard the boat were sent to the hospital, officials said. Two adults and a child were still missing on Monday. Wallace Wilkinson, died Thursday at his home in Hattiesburg, Miss. He was 89 Bradley’s son, David Bradley, confirmed the death. He said his father died of natural causes and had turned 89 on Tuesday. Carl Bradley served in the Wilkinson administration from 1988 until he resigned in October 1991. Bradley, a native of Muhlenberg County, was named natural resources secretary soon after Wilkinson took office. He had been an assistant to the natural resources secretary for a year before that. HERALD-LEADER FRANKFORT BUREAU FRANKFORT -Kentucky's property tax rate for 2015 will remain as it has been since 2008. The state Department of Revuene announced Wednesday that it has set the 2015 state real property tax rate at 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed valued. Stat law requires the department to set the real property rate no later than July 1 of each year. The rate is based on the revenue generated from the increase in taxable real property assessments from 2014 to 2015.
