The return of the Republican Governors Association to Kentucky television airwaves brings an unpopular national figure back to the state’s political consciousness: President Barack Obama. The RGA and Republican Attorneys General Association have dumped millions in the state to link Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway and attorney general candidate Andy Beshear to the president, hoping Obama’s poor approval numbers in Kentucky rub off on his fellow Democrats in their respective campaigns for constitutional office. Republican candidate for agriculture commissioner Ryan Quarles released a trio of geographically targeted television ads on Tuesday focusing on his background and efforts for each diverse region of Kentucky. Attorney General Jack Conway has hammered Republican gubernatorial opponent Matt Bevin in recent months over statements on education, taxes and other issues, but as the campaign nears the final days the Democratic candidate has turned positive on-air. In the 30 second ad Grimes looks directly to the camera promoting her successes in her first term in office. The firestorm over the alleged hiring of prostitutes for Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball players and recruits intensified Tuesday with a new report from ESPN. In a web story and segment on the show Outside the Lines, ESPN reported that five former University of Louisville players and recruits confirmed elements of the allegations. One former recruit, who was unnamed, told ESPN that he’d had sex with a prostitute paid by former U of L director of basketball operations Andre McGee. Jefferson County is vying for part of a huge pot of federal money meant to make communities more resilient during natural disasters. Kentucky is one of about 40 entities competing in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s National Disaster Resilience Competition. The money is part of a nearly billion-dollar pot appropriated for Hurricane Sandy relief. Some of that money is earmarked for the regions affected by Sandy, but about $820 million of it is open to the rest of the country. Jefferson County Public Schools students will get a plate full of locally grown food for lunch this week. As part of National Farm to School Month, JCPS cafeteria’s will serve a menu full of locally grown food at district elementary, middle and high schools on Wednesday and Thursday. The school district began its farm-to-school initiative about eight years ago with a bunch of apples from Huber’s Orchard and Winery in Starlight, Ind. Now, there are seven local farmers in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee providing produce for JCPS.
