Attorney General Andy Beshear files lawsuit against Gov. Matt Bevin over university cuts

FRANKFORT – Attorney General Andy Beshear followed through with his promise to file legislation against Gov. Bevin over 4.5 percent cuts to higher education during this fiscal year. The lawsuit filed on Monday in Franklin County Circuit Court questions Bevin’s authority to order the cuts to the budget passed two-years ago by the General Assembly. Kynect, Medicaid expansion bills fail to make it out of Senate committee

Gov. Bevin vetoes three bills brought by Republicans

Gov. Matt Bevin has vetoed three more bills passed by wide margins by the House and Senate for reasons including, “unnecessary government intrusion,” and additional costs on state agencies, according to veto messages. With his latest batch of vetoes Bevin has struck down legislation aimed at revamping child support guidelines, establishing a ‘Books for Brains’ Program to encourage preschool children to develop an appreciation of books and a bill which would provide residents of assisted living facilities with educational information... Read more 
Kentucky adults still have a hard time affording health care, according to a Kentucky Health Issues Poll. In 2015, one in five Kentucky adults either didn’t get care or delayed care due to cost, according to the report. That’s down from 2014 and 2009, when 22 percent and 32 percent, respectively, went without needed care due to cost. A new report shows the association between life expectancy and income varies depending on where a person lives. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers from Stanford University found the life expectancy for low-income residents in Louisville is 77.9 years, which places the city in the bottom 10. The average life expectancy among low-income individuals nationwide is 79.4 years. An environmental nonprofit has named an Eastern Kentucky river as one of the nation’s 10 most endangered. American Rivers released its annual list Tuesday, and it includes the Russell Fork River. The Russell Fork is on the border between Kentucky and Virginia, and flows through the Breaks Interstate Park. It’s used for whitewater rafting and fishing, but it’s coal mining that landed it on the annual list. For the past few years, the Russell Fork has been threatened by a mountaintop removal mine proposed by Paramount Coal, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources.
