FRANKFORT — Kentucky Democrats got their first glimpse of the party under gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway Monday, as the party faithful welcomed a new chairman with close ties to the likely nominee and rallied behind this year’s crop of candidates. Conway will almost certainly head the Democratic ballot this fall as his former chief deputy attorney general, Edgewood attorney Patrick Hughes, leads the Kentucky Democratic Party in his first election cycle as chairman, an appointment announced Saturday. 02/09/2015 05:52 PM
FRANKFORT — House Democrats unveiled on Monday legislation to combat heroin abuse in the state, including provisions for a tiered level of penalties for heroin traffickers and a local option needle-exchange program, something that many lawmakers objected to last session. House Bill 213,sponsored by Rep. John Tilley, D-Hopkinsville, calls for using money saved from 2011’s criminal justice reform to increase treatment programs in jails, community mental health centers and anti-drug efforts, similar to Senate Bill 5, sponsored this session by... Read more

The House Republican leadership team is adding newly created positions of “ranking members” in House committees to keep on top of the issues moving through the legislature this session. The positions essentially act as point persons in each committee, who will read and report the bills back to GOP caucus. “The persons we have selected as ranking members for House committees will be our point person on issues and bills that come before their respective committee,” said Rep. Jeff Hoover,... Read more
Human ties through generations, objects and location are elusive—often unseen—components of our daily lives. “At the Vanishing Point” helps connect the dots. The play by Naomi Iizuka takes place in Louisville’s Butchertown neighborhood and presents snippets of resident’s lives, woven together through intricate, cerebral phrases and motifs—resulting in a breath-taking survey of shared experience. Les Waters directs this play, as he did an earlier version that premiered during the 2004 Humana Festival of New American Plays. This version of “At the Vanishing Point” has been updated to include a slightly different group of characters, including “The Photographer” (Bruce McKenzie); Pete, a Thomas Edison [...]

Tyler Bohm, 9, straddled his orange bicycle and eyed the trail before him, waiting his turn. “There’s, like, jumps everywhere you look,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this in a cave.” Yes, a cave. On Monday, Bohm was one of nearly 100 cyclists who reserved an opening day pass to ride  the new mountain bike park in Louisville’s Mega Cavern. At 350,000 square feet, the park is the largest indoor bicycle park in the world, said Alec Zaremba, the park supervisor. Another feature: Because it’s underground, the temperature consistently hovers at bout 50 degrees, said Jim Lowry, who co-owns the cavern. Jacob Ryan | wfpl.org [...]

Update 6:59 p.m.: Needle Program Possible Issue Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers said Monday it’s unlikely that the state Senate would allow a provision to allow needle exchanges in a final version of the heroin bill. “I think they would have a very difficult time in the Senate,” said Stivers, a Republican from Manchester. A state House version of the bill filed earlier Monday would allow local health districts to set up needle exchanges—programs that provide clean needles to addicts to prevent the spread of blood-borne diseases like hepatitis C and HIV. Supporters say the program is also a way to provide initial treatment [...]
