Stivers advocates for healthcare change, says cost savings will prop up pensions

11/09/2015 10:56 PM
As time draws closer for Kentucky to pay a percentage of increased healthcare costs several Republicans are floating the idea of pulling the plug on the state portal to expanded healthcare and investing cost savings in other places — including the underfunded pension systems. The rates of uninsured have plummeted since implementing a state run health exchange and expanding the state’s Medicaid population, but the number of Kentuckians under Medicaid has ballooned, and it’s that population which will likely come... Read more

11/09/2015 06:28 PM
By: Ryan Alessi Republished with permission from the Center for Public Integrity A month after starting to investigate Kentucky’s Agriculture Department, state Auditor Adam Edelen called a meeting for his team to update each other on the transgressions of ex-Ag Commissioner Richie Farmer. Auditors took turns sharing revelations at that February 2012 get-together about how Farmer, a former University of Kentucky basketball hero, ordered his agency’s employees to build a basketball court in his backyard. He had them drive him on hunting trips... Read more

Some success, but still more work to do in fight against heroin addiction

11/09/2015 03:49 PM
FRANKFORT – While there have been some successes in the battle against heroin addiction, there is still work to be done was the message from officials to members of the SB 192 Implementation Oversight Committee on Monday. One controversial part of the bill was the needle-exchange program, where addicts bring in used needles to a designated location and exchange them for clean ones. To date, three exchanges are currently up and running one in Louisville, Lexington, and Pendleton County. The Louisville Metro Syringe... Read more

11/09/2015 09:23 AM
The Republican Party Executive Committee has elected J. McCauley “Mac” Brown, vice president of Brown-Forman and a prominent political fundraiser to lead the party as outgoing chair Steve Robertson joins the private sector. This is the second high profile move for Brown who was named the chairman of GOP Gov.-elect Matt Bevin’s 21-person transition steering committee last week. “I am humbled by the vote of confidence from Republican leaders from around the state, and I accept this opportunity to... Read more
This is the second story in a two-part investigation. The first story can be found here. Rick Handshoe used to dream about building a house on his 50-some acres of property in Floyd County. He put a trailer there and raised his daughter. He planted an apple orchard and a garden. For years, he’d stand on the banks of the two small streams that met on his Eastern Kentucky land and catch crawdads and minnows. “It’s a beautiful place,” Handshoe said gesturing to his land one afternoon in August. “But this is poison.” He pointed to the water. Almost a decade ago, Handshoe began [...]

Democrat Pat Mulvihill began his first day as a member of the Louisville Metro Council on Monday. The District 10 representative serves a wide swath of neighborhoods, including parts of the Highlands, Germantown, Camp Taylor and Buechel. Democrat Steve Magre, who was appointed following the death of council president Jim King last winter, vacated the seat. After winning last Tuesday’s special election, Mulvihill became the third person to represent District 10 on the council in less than a year. The transition from Magre to Mulvihill could be a little awkward, though. That’s because Magre says he’ll be running for the District 10 seat next year. In all likelihood, Magre and Mulvihill [...]

The Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund is looking to divvy up about $450,000 for developers to build housing for poorer residents. The funds are part of the trust fund’s HOMEbuyer program, which earlier this year was streamlined to help low-income residents get into housing faster. The federally funded HOMEbuyer program provides developers with money to construct homes for low-income residents, said Rachel Hurst, executive director of the affordable housing trust. The program also helps residents find affordable housing. Nonprofit and for-profit developers are encouraged to apply for the funding, Hurst said. A caveat is that the funds will only be granted to developers who are in contact with [...]
