Sen. McConnell honors veterans at dedication of Fallen Heroes Sculpture in Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE — The names of 106 fallen soldiers who served in the four major conflicts of the 20th century were read aloud next to the Fallen Heroes Sculpture at Veteran’s Park in Shelbyville. As leaves fell from the trees surrounding the monument and onlookers, the four veterans, including 99-year old former Gen. World War II veteran who survived attack on Pearl Harbor honored in Williamstown

WILLIAMSTOWN – A tradition continued in Williamstown on Wednesday as Grant County honored one of their own on Veterans Day in a ceremony at Williamstown High School. Holton Smith, 94, was honored as the 2015 Williamstown Veteran of the Year. Smith enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and flew 52 reconnaissance missions; flying a P-38 aircraft while photographing identified locations for the government. Gov.-elect Bevin's transition team releases website for non-merit applicants

Gov.-elect Matt Bevin’s transition team unveiled a website on Wednesday for those interested in applying for any of the hundreds of non-merit positions that will be available in his administration. The site, www.bevintransition.com, features an application process for candidates “who share (Bevin’s) conservative values, his unwavering commitment to the best interests of the people, and his willingness to work long hard hours to fulfill public responsibilities.” The website will fall under the purview of volunteers on Bevin’s non-merit Personnel Advisory Committee until... Read more

If each U.S. state were its own country, Kentucky would have the seventh-highest incarceration rate in the world, according to a recent analysis by the Prison Policy Initiative. The report found that the U.S. incarcerates “716 people for every 100,000 residents, more than any other country.” Kentucky was above the national average, with a rate of 948 people per 100,000 residents. When a federal judge asked Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’ six deputy clerks in September if they would abide by his order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the lone objector had a conflict beyond any on religious grounds.
