Gov.-elect Bevin taps Mac Brown to head transition team

11/05/2015 05:26 PM
J. McCauley “Mac” Brown, vice president of Brown-Forman and a prominent political fundraiser, has been named chairman of GOP Gov.-elect Matt Bevin’s 21-person transition steering committee. Bevin announced the move in a news release on Thursday. “Mac is highly respected for his business acumen and strategic planning experience with one of Kentucky’s most successful companies,” Bevin said in a statement. “It is an honor to have him leading this transition.” Since 1998, Forman has contributed $110,426 to various candidates for Kentucky offices and... Read more

Rand Paul: Matt Bevin victory the beginning of GOP "growing to ascendency in Kentucky"

The reasons for Republican Gov.-elect Matt Bevin’s victory in Kentucky are plenty: his outsider persona, a deeply red state, the unpopularity of the national Democratic Party in Kentucky, but it’s just the start of things to come, says U.S. Sen. Rand Paul. Paul, who found support for his 2010 Senate campaign using a similar message, said Bevin ran a “great campaign to the fact that he’s not a career politician and he’s a businessman, and people want an outsider.” “I think... Read more
This weekend, aliens, superheroes and cartoon characters of all sorts will descend on Louisville. The Wizard World Comic Con is happening Friday through Sunday at the Kentucky International Convention Center, featuring actors, writers and artists from across the spectrum of pop culture. There are sessions for aspiring writers (“How To Be A Professional Geek”), panel discussions on the classics (“Stars Wars Psychology: Jedi Mind Tricks”), and even a Ghostbusters-themed Christian worship service on Sunday morning. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume as their favorite character, and the convention even sponsors professional cosplayers (that’s short for “costume players”) who look like they [...]

Just east of downtown Louisville is a campsite, tucked in difficult-to-access woods not far from Campbell Street. Broken glass and plastic cups are scattered across the winding footpath that leads over railroad tracks, up a small embankment and, eventually, to a clearing packed with a handful of tattered tents. Piles of empty cans and dirty clothes are strewn about. The nearby fence encircling an auto scrap yard does little to drown out the clangs and bangs of crushing steel. Piles of feces sit nearby, and the stinging stench of urine hang heavy in the still air. This place is known to Louisville advocates for the homeless [...]

Until Tuesday, there had been only eight Republican governors in Kentucky history. And only two — Louie Nunn and Ernie Fletcher — in my lifetime. For those who believe in a strong two-party system, the election of Matt Bevin is a welcome event. It’s an opportunity to bring new blood into government. And it offers Democrats a chance to re-examine their party. Of the last two Republicans to lead this state, Louie Nunn of Glasgow was by far the better. Nunn’s administration was highlighted by passage and implementation of one of the nation’s best community mental health programs. Under his leadership, the [...]
