Congress is on the clock as President Barack Obama seeks support “to degrade and ultimately destroy” Islamic extremists in Iraq and Syria, and U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth says Obama’s requested aid to train Syrian moderates will likely materialize. Congressional action granting further military force in the Middle East, though, could prove more difficult, he said. Kentucky U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes roused the Democratic faithful in west Louisville Saturday, opening a field office in an area that has historically supported the party’s candidates. Republicans have chance to do something in 2015 that hasn’t happened in 124 years, elect a lieutenant governor from northern Kentucky. U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign highlighted his role in resolving last year’s debt ceiling crisis in a new television ad while his opponent, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, released a Web ad questioning McConnell’s stance on issues such as pay equality, increasing the minimum wage and refinancing student loan debt. McConnell’s ad, titled “Leader” and airing statewide, uses coverage from last October as the 16-day government shutdown ended. State budget director Jane C. Driskell said Wednesday that General Fund receipts increased 1.2 percent in August compared to the same month last year. Total revenues for the month were $671.9 million, compared to $663.7 million during August 2013. So far this fiscal year 2015 that began July 1, General Fund receipts have increased 1.7 percent. The official revenue estimate for the fiscal year calls for revenue to increase 3.6 percent compared to last year’s actual [...]
