Now in their fifth year Emerge Kentucky , the Democratic women’s group which teaches candidates to run for office, is “here to stay,” according to board chair Jennifer Moore. Emerge ran 27 women on the ballot on Nov. 4, with candidates across the state filing for offices from Congress all the way to county clerk and school board. NEWPORT — Every year, there are fewer and fewer living World War II veterans and some of the youngest that served are now over 90 years old. Johnny “TV” Peluso, 91, a lifelong resident of Newport, is one of them. Peluso saw fighting in some of the most brutal battles of the war, and was captured by German soldiers near the end of the war. October tax receipts up 4.6 percent from last year, but still ground to make up in last eight months of fiscal year

October’s general fund tax receipts grew 4.6 percent compared to last October, but revenue growth must continue to excel in the fiscal year after a slow first quarter, State Budget Director Jane Driskell said in a news release Monday. Last month’s growth — $755.7 million compared to $722.5 million in October 2013 — helped push first-quarter tax revenue to 1.9 percent after the fiscal year’s first three months produced 1.1 percent growth. Some see charter schools being the answer for low-income, low-performing students in public schools

Legislators on Kentucky’s Education Committee heard testimony on Monday from advocates on charter schools and how minorities can benefit from the education system. Wayne Lewis, chair of the Kentucky Charter Schools Association, told the Interim Joint Committee on Education that charter schools give low-income families a choice if their students’ needs are not being met by the public school that they are attending. By Jack Brammer jbrammer@herald-leader.com FRANKFORT — After four months of anemic growth, Kentucky's General Fund revenue increased 4.6 percent in October compared to a year ago, State Budget Director Jane Driskell announced Monday. Total revenue for the month was $755.7 million, compared to $722.5 million during October 2013. Receipts have increased 1.9 percent for the first four months of the fiscal year, and need to grow 4.4 percent over the final eight months of this month to achieve the official revenue estimate of $9.8 million.
