Top three all tied up in Republican primary for governor

Just seven days from the May 19 primary, state Republicans are split in their support among gubernatorial contenders. Merely 3 percentage points separates the top candidate from third place in the race, according to the latest Bluegrass Poll conducted by SurveyUSA for the Lexington Herald-Leader, Louisville Courier Journal, WKYT-TV and WHAS-TV. Attorney General Jack Conway files federal antitrust lawsuit against Marathon Petroleum

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway has sued Marathon Petroleum, accusing the fuel company on Tuesday of unfairly keeping competitors out of the state and keeping gas prices high. Conway filed the antitrust lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Louisville against the state’s largest supplier of gasoline and reformulated gasoline, which must be sold in Louisville and Covington during summer months to curb pollution from emissions. Republican candidates for attorney general release commercials ahead of primary

With a week before the primary election, Republican candidates for attorney general are running positive campaign commercials and trying to turnout supporters. State Sen. Whitney Westerfield released his first ad of the campaign titled “A Fresh Start” on Tuesday. The ad for Westerfield promotes his position as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman and his work on the heroin problem in Kentucky. “Whitney’s led efforts to combat heroin abuse and strengthen laws against domestic violence,” a narrator says in the ad. Louisville-based health insurer Humana may be taken over by rival Aetna, according to a report Tuesday in a business journal. Investors.com reported that Aetna could offer as much as $200 shares for Humana. Aetna is also reportedly considering another insurer, Cigna, for merger possibilities. The report said: Following an investor meeting with Aetna, Leerink Partners analyst Anagha Gupte said a deal is likely and that “cheap debt” makes either an Aetna-Humana merger or an Aetna-Cigna pairing “meaningfully accretive possibilities and imminent,” according to reports, with Aetna potentially offering $200 per share for Humana. Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway has filed a federal lawsuit against Marathon Petroleum, accusing the company of abusing its monopoly on the wholesale gasoline market in the commonwealth. Conway says Marathon is engaging in anti-competitive practices that result in higher gas prices in Kentucky, particularly in Louisville and Northern Kentucky. Republican candidates for governor say they want to stop talking about controversy, but during the final debate before Tuesday’s primary, they couldn’t resist trying to throw a final punch. But the state’s Road Fund, which pays for highway and other transportation projects, dropped 12.8 percent in April collections and is on course to end this fiscal year $11.1 million short of what was expected.
