LEXINGTON — After coming up well short of knocking off U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell in 2014, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is looking at her re-election bid as an interview for the job, and not a personal contest. Lawmakers and candidates reviewing increased federal authority over U.S. waters

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers followed through with the finalization of a rule regulating waterways of the United States, which some in the GOP fear could turn into a land grab. Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones has been selected to emcee the annual Fancy Farm picnic’s political speeches when candidates, officeholders and thousands of visitors descend on the small town in far western Kentucky Aug. 1, the event’s organizer announced in a news release Wednesday. It recently gained another accolade. The advertising agency that marketed Kynect, Louisville-based Doe-Anderson, has won an Effie Award for having the most effective marketing campaign in North America. A work group tasked with coming up with solutions for Louisville homeowners affected by spring flooding is considering a “quick-buy” program that would provide money to qualifying residents to help them raze their homes and relocate. But Greg Heitzman, executive director of Metropolitan Sewer District (the groups tasked with enforcing that rule) and chair of the work group, on Wednesday said there is not enough money to “deal with all the homes” affected by the flooding. The Obama administration announced new clean water rules today that it says will protect sources of drinking water for 117 million Americans, rules welcomed by environmental groups, but bitterly opposed by congressional Republicans and farm state democrats. HERALD-LEADER FRANKFORT BUREAU FRANKFORT -- Mediation in claims involving sexual harassment, retaliation and other misconduct against state lawmakers has been postponed until June 22. A closed mediation session was scheduled to begin Tuesday but was postponed for a few weeks while one of the attorneys involved recuperates from an accident. The mediation will address two cases. One involves sexual harassment claims by legislative staffers Yolanda Costner and Cassaundra Cooper against former state Rep. John Arnold, D-Sturgis. Arnold has denied any wrongdoing. Gov. Steve Beshear, as chair of the Kentucky Economic Development Partnership Board, said the board will conduct a national search to replace Hayes. No firm departure date has been set for Hayes, of Louisville, to step down. Timing will be based upon completion of a successful transition period so not to disrupt ongoing project activities and discussions, said a release from the Economic Development Cabinet. Richard Heath of Mayfield, a Republican candidate for agriculture commissioner in Tuesday's primary election, asked Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes Thursday for a statewide recanvass. Unofficial vote totals currently show Heath wth a 1,427-vote deficit to his opponent, state Rep. Ryan Quarles of Georgetown.
