Mitch McConnell says President Obama could win on Iran nuclear deal

08/18/2015 06:44 PM
GEORGETOWN — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will make a motion to disapprove the nuclear deal with Iran negotiated by the White House, but he says President Barack Obama could still succeed on Capitol Hill. McConnell explained the scenario to the Scott County Chamber of Commerce on Monday in Georgetown, saying that if his motion to disapprove is successful, Obama will likely veto the disapproval, forcing congressional Democrats to sustain the veto. “So he’s still got a great likelihood of success,... Read more

08/18/2015 04:38 PM
Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway launched the first negative ad from a gubernatorial nominee on Tuesday, hitting Republican Matt Bevin on seemingly every tax issue that has emerged this year and in last year’s U.S. Senate primary. The 30-second spot, titled “30 Times,” begins with Bevin’s press conference upon launching his bid to unseat then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, telling reporters that he had “no tax delinquency problem, nor have I ever.” The ad then transitions to reports of more than $100,000... Read more

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is seeking support from the Republican Party of Kentucky’s central committee in his bid to pursue an early presidential caucus in the commonwealth. Paul, R-Ky., transferred $250,000 to the RPK account to fund the caucus with plans to move an additional $200,000 “roughly mid fall after all the budgets and rules are finalized,” Paul told members of the RPK central committee in an email and letter sent Monday. The GOP presidential contender also has plans to host... Read more

Clashes over religious freedom, LGBT rights will continue in governor's race and 2016 session

08/16/2015 03:03 PM
Kentucky’s place as a flashpoint for contention between LGBT-rights advocates and religious-freedom supporters will continue beyond next year’s legislative session, with recent U.S. and state history giving both sides reasons for optimism. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis’s refusal to issue marriage licenses after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage has drawn national attention to Kentucky. That prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to file a federal lawsuit against Davis, who cited religious objections to same-sex marriage for her office’s new... Read more

Matt Bevin downplays BuzzFeed report on 2011 OSHA violations, calls agency 'an unfortunate nuisance'

08/14/2015 10:39 PM
Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin dismissed a report by BuzzFeed News Friday that his bell-manufacturing company in Connecticut had paid more than $12,000 in penalties to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, saying his December 2011 violations were administrative in nature. What’s more, Bevin said the organization operates without a budget and targets businesses for funding. “If OSHA comes in and you end up paying somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or 12 thousand dollars, essentially they didn’t find anything,” Bevin said... Read more

With the film “Straight Outta Compton” premiering in theater’s across the country on Friday, many Web-savvy users are creating their own “Straight Outta” memes using a free web based app. One Kentucky politician, Republican agriculture commissioner candidate Ryan Quarles, introduced his own picture featuring him in front of a barn with a phrase reading, “Straight Outta the Barn.” We decided to... Read more
In November, Ohioans will vote by public referendum whether to legalize marijuana in the state. But in Kentucky, where statewide ballot initiatives are not permitted, the path to legalization must run through the state legislature. And while recent efforts have coalesced behind legislation to legalize marijuana for medicinal use, lawmakers haven’t exactly been forthcoming with their support. Jaime Montalvo, founder of Kentuckians for Medicinal Marijuana, said most state lawmakers are reluctant to have their names tied to the cause, which can be easily muddied in attacks from opponents. “They know something has to happen, but they don’t know how. It’s just overwhelming to them, I [...]

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday again endorsed a Kentucky Republican presidential caucus, this time just days before the state party’s central committee votes on the proposal. The rule change, which the state party’s central committee will consider on Saturday in Frankfort, would allow Sen. Rand Paul to simultaneously run for re-election to the Senate while also seeking the state support for the Republican presidential nomination. State law prohibits a name from appearing twice on a ballot. Under the proposal, Republican voters would cast ballots for presidential contenders at events spread throughout the state and run by local Republican parties. This week, conservative WDRB.com [...]
