Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Greg Leichty offers harsh criticism of Grimes

04/28/2014 07:37 PM
Greg Leichty might not win the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, but he at least wants to have an effect on the race by helping likely nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes “up her game” by being more specific and cutting out the “mush-mouth” answers. Leichty, a communications professor at the University of Louisville, has been experimenting with ways to get his message across. He wants more people to get involved in campaigns by limiting campaign contributions and moving election day to... Read more

Rand Paul said after touring the school Monday. It’s a private school that charges no tuition for at-risk students in elementary and middle school. All the costs are covered by donations from foundations, individuals and companies, according to the school . Paul has been making an effort to reach out to economically-challenged... Read more

04/28/2014 12:43 PM
Matt Bevin aimed to reboot his U.S. Senate campaign Monday with an announcement that turned out to be a pledge to outline an economic plan later in the week. Bevin, who called the press conference Sunday evening and billed it as a “major announcement in the U.S. Senate race,” clearly is seeking to take back some control of the narrative of the race after being slammed by opponents in the media for his involvement at a cockfighting rally a month... Read more

In this contentious rivalry, Hatfields and McCoys are on the same side as Harris out-raises Hall

04/27/2014 05:57 PM
The Democratic 93rd state House primary in Pike and Martin counties is shaping up to be one of the most contentious of the spring as often embattled state Rep. W. Keith Hall faces his toughest challenge yet in Pike County Magistrate Chris Hall. It’s perhaps fitting that such a rivalry is brewing in Hatfield-McCoy territory in Eastern Kentucky. On that score, though, Harris is ahead as his campaign finance report boasts donations from five Hatfields and three McCoys. Overall Harris... Read more

Republican says state House under GOP control would be more likely to push for casinos

04/27/2014 05:05 PM
The 2014 General Assembly ended up passing on measures to let voters decide the fate of expanded gambling, but Republicans won’t let happen if the GOP controls the state House next year, said Rep. David Osborne, R-Prospect. Osborne said the blame for inaction ultimately rests on House Democrats who refused to vote on the legislation in committee. House Democratic leaders had said they were reluctant to push the issue if it was doomed in the state Senate. “The piece of blame... Read more

04/25/2014 02:18 PM
While the campaign finance reports for Republican state House District candidates Shellie May and Phil Moffett might not have eye-popping figures, the donor lists for those two read like a who’s who of Republican politics. May — the former Jefferson County Republican Party chairwoman — and Moffett — a Republican candidate for governor in 2011 — are competing for the Republican nomination to succeed GOP Rep. Julie Raque Adams in the 32nd House District in Louisville. Overall, May has... Read more

Bevin was asked a direct question by American Gamefowl Defense Director Dave Devereaux. Devereaux asked Bevin “Will you vote... Read more

04/24/2014 03:21 PM
After announcing her decision not to run for governor next year, Crit Luallen spent much of Thursday on the phone with supporters — and later reporters — explaining her reasoning for taking a pass on a race she had been gearing up to run. She told supporters what she said in the initial statement: that her personal life took precedence over politics. In a phone interview with Pure Politics, Luallen said her friends and supporters reacted initially with disappointment, then expressed... Read more

Crit Luallen, the former auditor and longtime state government official, on Thursday took herself out of the conversation for the Democratic primary in next year’s governor’s race. Luallen said in a statement to reporters that 2015 “wasn’t the right time” based on family and personal goals. Here’s her statement: After careful deliberation, I have decided not to enter the 2015 Governor’s race. I remain passionate about Kentucky and its potential for the future. How different are Bevin and McConnell their approaches to health care?

04/23/2014 10:22 PM
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and his chief Republican challenger, Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, have spent a considerable amount of their public remarks and commercial airtime bashing the Affordable Care Act. Bevin has even tried to contrast himself with McConnell by saying the Senate Republican leader hasn’t done enough to block or repeal the Affordable Care Act. As for the alternative, well, McConnell and Bevin seem to want to prescribe the same fixes to the U.S. health care system. Here’s what... Read more

Mitch McConnell, Bevin says, has “no chance of winning in November.” “It’s why I’ve got to win this nomination in the primary,” Bevin said. “We will lose this seat in the General Election if Mitch McConnell is the nominee. One of the most conservative Democratic lawmakers, retiring Rep. Damron also was most prolific lawmaker

04/20/2014 11:36 PM
Perhaps no lawmaker better embodied Kentucky’s brand of conservative Democrats more than Rep. Bob Damron. Damron, of Nicholasville, sponsored numerous NRA-backed gun bills, including Kentucky’s concealed carry law in the 1990s, as well as the 2013 “religious freedom” bill. That legislation broadly forbids government from infringing on a religion’s action. Some feared that could give people license to discriminate using religion as a defense.
