Today's Political Headlines

By Sam Youngman syoungman@herald-leader.com If Kentucky manages to beat Wisconsin in Saturday night's Final Four game, U.S. Rep. Andy Barr will have some Badger State cheese to go with the bourbon he won off U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth last week. Barr and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., have a placed a friendly wager on the Wildcats-Badgers game, and the stakes are cheesy. If Wisconsin wins, Barr has to give Ryan some Kentucky beer cheese. If the Cats move on, Ryan, the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee, owes Barr some Wisconsin Gouda. "Between their unprecedented tournament play and the Julius-Randle-home-court advantage, I am confident that the [...]

By Sam Youngman syoungman@herald-leader.com President Barack Obama told an Ann Arbor, Michigan crowd Wednesday that the Kentucky Wildcats' defeat of the Michigan Wolverines in the Elite Eight Sunday was "as good of a game as we've seen the entire season." Visiting Michigan to rally support for raising the minimum wage, Obama directed some of his opening remarks to the Wolverines, praising their season and the dramatic battle they lost to the Cats. The president, who has long endured abysmal approval numbers in the Bluegrass, called out a number of Michigan players by name, but not surprisingly, did not mention any Kentucky players. "You guys had [...]

By Jack Brammer jbrammer@herald-leader.com FRANKFORT — State Juvenile Justice Commissioner A. Hasan Davis submitted his resignation Wednesday, effective April 30. In a letter to Justice and Public Safety Secretary J. Michael Brown, Davis said he is re-evaluating his priorities, especially since the state legislature is expected to approve a juvenile justice overhaul bill later this month that is designed to jail fewer youths. Davis said he decided when he started the job two years ago that once reform to Kentucky’s juvenile justice system was achieved he would “turn my attention and focus to comprehensive and holistic work that enables me to impact children in [...]

WASHINGTON – The watchers (that’s the media) of the 2016 Republican presidential pre-primary (which the media has kind of made up) are noting who will be in Las Vegas this weekend – and who won’t be there. The Republican Jewish Coalition is meeting in Vegas and that’s where New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker all will be speaking. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush also was in Vegas Thursday. While there, the might-be candidates have met or will meet with Republican billionaire donor and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, hence this has been dubbed the [...]

Republican Senate candidate Matt Bevin is capitalizing on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent campaign blooper: the Louisville businessman is going to run a tv ad during the Louisville-Kentucky Sweet 16 showdown depicting the senator in a Duke jersey. “March Madness in Kentucky: commitment, courage – you gotta love it,” says Bevin, who is challenging McConnell in the May 20 GOP Senate primary, says in the ad’s opening. Then Bevin points to a cut-out of McConnell wearing Duke jersey No. 32. “Even if your team is…already out of the tournament,” Bevin says. That’s a reference to the McConnell campaign’s ad that mistakenly showed [...]

WASHINGTON – Saying that the relationship between the Food and Drug Administration and the pharmaceutical industry “requires closer inspection,” Rep. Hal Rogers and two other House members are asking for a probe into how federal regulators approved a powerful new painkiller. The drug Zohydro ER has just come onto the market, but it has been accompanied by objections from lawmakers, state attorneys general, consumer and health care organizations. Zohydro contains hydrocodone, a powerful narcotic. Rogers and other critics have warned that the drug threatens to worsen a national epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Rogers and Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., have introduced legislation to [...]
