By Sam Youngman syoungman@herald-leader.com The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition (KOC), a nonprofit group running ads promoting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, is focusing the last ad of a $1.8 million buy on coal and President Barack Obama. The group has already run two ads -- one on veterans' issues and one on the estate tax -- as part of the three-week campaign. Because the KOC is a 501(c)4 nonprofit, it is only permitted to run issue-oriented ads that do not advocate voting for or against a particular candidate. The last ad to run begins with footage of Obama saying "so if somebody wants to build a [...]

By Jack Brammer jbrammer@herald-leader.com FRANKFORT -- Kentucky Treasurer Todd Hollenbach has returned more than $100 million in unclaimed property to its rightful owners in his six years in office. That is more than all the state treasurers combined returned in the 60 years before his administration, he said at a Capitol news conference to celebrate his goal of surpassing $100 million in returned property. He also announced a new goal of "120 in 120." He plans to visit all 120 counties in Kentucky and return $120 million before his term as treasurer ends in 2015. Each year, the state treasury collects million of dollars [...]

24 years, 3 parties and a caucus of one later, Leeper leaves his legislative legacy
04/13/2014 07:06 PM
While the word unique is often carelessly thrown around, it is the perfect adjective to describe state Sen. Bob Leeper and his 24-year tenure in the General Assembly. Leeper was first elected as a Democrat in 1990, then switched to be a Republican in 1999, giving Republicans an extra seat of breathing room as they took control of the state Senate for the first time. Later, amid a disagreement with Republican leadership, Leeper switched his registration to be an independent.... Read more
Gov. Beshear uses veto pen to ax public private partnership bill; give back flexibility to KCTCS
04/11/2014 06:20 PM
Governor Steve Beshear on Friday struck down an entire bill aimed at encouraging public-private partnerships because of language excluding tolls from the Northern Kentucky bridge project, and he vetoed a provision in the budget to allow for more community college projects. The public-private-partnership bill, nicknamed P-3, would follow the example set by the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky set when they built new dorms using private firms. Private companies are then paid back using income from residence fees.... Read more
After 32 years, Walter Blevins looks to end one political career while starting another
04/11/2014 11:15 AM
Sen. Walter “Doc” Blevins isn’t retiring from the legislature … yet. But he’s running for another job — Rowan County judge-executive — in a six-candidate Democratic primary. And if he wins his party’s nomination and, later, the job in the November election, he would have to resign from the legislature two years before his term expires. It would be quite a change for Blevins and the General Assembly. Blevins, 64, has spent half his life in the legislature and the last... Read more
AG candidate Beshear recruits prominent Democrats, including his dad's appointees, as fundraiser hosts
04/10/2014 03:16 PM
Of the $885,000 in donations 2015 attorney general candidate Andy Beshear collected in the last three months, more than half of it came from 42 fundraising events, most of which were held by prominent Democrats and allies of the Beshear family. And out of those 42 hosts who held events for Beshear, 15 of them were appointed by Beshear’s father, Gov. Steve Beshear, to cabinet positions or various boards and commissions, according to a review of Beshear’s finance reports. That... Read more
