Democratic candidate for attorney general Andy Beshear is continuing a major statewide advertising campaign with a commercial featuring a Republican businesswoman and former client singing his praises. Debby Mobley, the co-owner of Truck America Training in Shepherdsville, which had been awarded $11.4 million by a Bullitt County jury in August 2012, said Beshear led her legal team in a suit against the city of Hillview. “He took on City Hall — and won,” Mobley said in the ad. ... Read more

Some bar owners in Louisville say the city’s burgeoning bourbon and food scene could take a hit if the Metro Council changes closing times from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m. Last week, Metro Councilman Tom Owen, a Democrat who represents the Highlands, said he was mulling whether to propose changing the time bars are required to stop serving alcoholic beverages. Last call in Louisville bars is 4 a.m. Owen, whose district includes the Bardstown Road/Baxter Avenue entertainment corridor, began looking into the change amid ongoing issues — from alleged drug use to bar fights — at and around the bar Cahoots on Bardstown Road. He said residents [...]

Mary Campbell steps over a pile of old bricks and squeezes into a hallway heaped with the remnants of a long life — burnt out lamps, discarded boxes, busted chairs. She points down the hall, past broken appliances and shelves caked in cobwebs, to a crumbled section of ceiling blackened by mold and water damage. The roof above this spot collapsed about a year ago, she says. That’s just one of the problems in Campbell’s Smoketown home. Gutters have fallen. Windows are broken. There’s a tree growing out of a second-floor wall. Campbell, 73, is retired and lives on a fixed income. There’s no way she could [...]

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has gotten national attention for her refusal to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but two other Kentucky county clerks have adopted similar policies in recent months. The only major difference: Neither has been sued. Like Kim Davis, Casey County Clerk Casey Davis (no relation to Kim) and Whitley County Clerk Kay Schwartz stopped issuing marriage licenses after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in June. All three clerks say their deeply held religious beliefs prevent them from granting the forms to same-sex couples. On Friday, Whitley County Clerk Kay Schwartz told WFPL News she has resumed issuing marriage licenses, but [...]
