Day Twenty Nine of KY's 2014 Session In Review

The House Education Committee passed a bill yesterday that would establish a statewide “Books for Brains” program to encourage reading among Kentucky’s preschoolers.
HB 341, sponsored by Rep. Tilley, would provide age-appropriate books to children age 5 and under statewide through an arrangement with a private nonprofit that would select and mail the books. The program would be based on the popular Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, which partners locally to provide books to preschool age children in the U.S. and other countries.
49 Kentucky counties are already engaged in some way with the Imagination Library program. Imagination Library has delivered nearly 40 million books to children in the US, Canada, and the UK since it began operations in 1996, according to the organization’s web site. Books for Brains would be administered by the state Department for Libraries and Archives, which would also oversee a trust fund that would be established by the bill.

By Sam Youngman syoungman@herald-leader.com The U.S. Chamber of Commerce will begin running a new television ad in Kentucky starting Wednesday that describes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as someone who is fighting against "Obamacare" and for Kentucky's future. The ad features several pictures of women and families and is narrated by two female voices, both of which warn against President Barack Obama's health care law and portray McConnell as waging war against the law on behalf of Kentuckians. "Most of us don't get caught up in politics," the women say, trading off lines. "Between kids, bills, work there's just no time for it. But [...]
