Hospitals struggle with increasing number of "non-emergency" ER visits due to Medicaid expansion

CYNTHIANA — The emergency rooms of Kentucky’s hospitals are facing a crisis of too many patients, but not because of an increase in illnesses, like the rest of the nation Kentucky saw an increase in non-emergency visits because more individuals have health insurance coverage. In Kentucky, more than 330,000 people became Medicaid eligible when the state expanded the program on January 1. Louisville lawmaker says state should keep doing business with Seven Counties Services

Rep. Julie Raque Adams, R-Louisville, says the state needs to keep contracts with Seven Counties Services in place and provide a way for the mental health agency to pay their obligations to the retirement system. Adams said while there is active litigation between the pension system and Seven Counties Services the state should determine the actual cost the agency owes for retirees and figure out a way for them to pay the obligation and then continue working with the agency.... Read more

Retiring Rep. Ben Waide indicted for alleged violations of campaign finance laws

Retiring Rep. Ben Waide, R-Madisonville, was indicted Tuesday by Attorney General Jack Conway for alleged violations of Kentucky campaign finance laws during his 2010 re-election campaign. Waide was indicted on two counts of “knowingly accepting contributions from a corporation,” and “causing funds in his campaign account to be expended for purposes that were not allowable campaign expenditures” which are Class D Felonies. The district has changed through redistricting and is now comprised of Pendelton, Harrison and part of Scott Counties and McKee is facing a tough opponent in Falmouth Mayor Mark Hart, who also is a firefighter and paramedic. Congress could be very close to passing $17 billion in reforms to the Department of Veterans Affairs which U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell said he hoped could be accomplished quickly. Marksberry, an Owensboro contractor, said in a statement that he had collected only half of the 5,000 signatures needed to run as an independent.
