Hal Heiner leads GOP contenders for governor in Bluegrass Poll

With just more than two months before the May 19 primary, Hal Heiner is leading the four-Republican pack in Kentucky’s gubernatorial race by 8 percentage points, according to a Bluegrass Poll released Tuesday. The poll, conducted by SurveyUSA for The Courier-Journal, WHAS-TV in Louisville, The Lexington Herald-Leader and WKYT-TV in Lexington, also found that presumptive Democratic nominee Attorney General Jack Conway continues to outpoll his GOP counterparts in a hypothetical general election contest. FRANKFORT — The House Judiciary Committee has passed the beginnings of a compromise on anti-heroin legislation Tuesday, although negotiations are expected to continue in conference committee during the upcoming veto recess. The judiciary panel amended Senate Bill 192, stripping the legislation of its original provisions on health care services for inmates and inserting language that largely resembles the House’s version of a heroin resolution. Bill which addresses Kentucky Teachers Retirement System shortfall, without bond proposal, passes Senate

FRANKFORT – The Senate has passed House Bill 4, minus the $3.3 billion bond proposal to help the Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement System which was passed by the House, by a 26 to 10 vote on Tuesday. The Senate’s amended version would set up a task force to fully study the system during the interim and come back with recommendations by mid-December of this year. Senate resolution which addresses workforce training passes House committee

FRANKFORT – A Senate resolution designed to look at ways to better prepare Kentucky students for future jobs unanimously passed the House Committee on Education Tuesday. Senate Concurrent Resolution 103, sponsored by Sen. David Givens, R-Greensburg, would establish the Kentucky Workforce Oversight Task Force, exclusively made up of legislators, which would study and develop recommendations concerning the benefits, investments, and funding of workforce education which is estimated at $900 million a year. Uber, Lyft face stricter regulations under Senate proposal nearing conclusion

FRANKFORT — Legislation allowing the Transportation Cabinet to further regulate ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber has cleared one of its final legislative hurdles Tuesday. The House Transportation Committee unanimously passed Senate Bill 153, sending the bill the House’s consent calendar and all but ensuring its trip to Gov. Steve Beshear’s desk. Hoover looking to thwart "shenanigans," expel GOP bills from committees through discharge petitions

FRANKFORT — As lawmakers rush to advance bills before adjourning for a 10-day veto recess, House Minority Leader Jeff Hoover is trying to force to the floor 13 GOP priority bills that have stalled in their respective committees. Hoover filed six discharge petitions Wednesday and seven more Monday on legislation that would create medical review panels to pre-screen malpractice suits, ban abortions beyond 20 weeks of fetal development, nullify federal gun-control laws, create a drug-testing program for recipients of public benefits... Read more 
With days left in the 2015 legislative session, state lawmakers haven’t moved on a bill to stabilize fuel taxes that have plummeted due to low gas prices. The fuel tax accounts for more than half of revenue that goes into the state’s road fund, which pays for highway and bridge construction and repair in the state. “That’s a critical issue, especially now with Mother Nature,” said Senate President Robert Stivers, referring to the damage weather’s can do to roads. Louisville Metro Government will pay $1.5 million to settle a legal suit filed by a group of young men wrongfully arrested in summer 2014. Craig Dean, Shaquazz Allen, Jerron Bush and Tyrone Booker Jr, dubbed the “Misidentified Four,” were arrested on the front porch of a west Louisville home March 22 after being accused of first degree robbery. On the same night the teens were arrested, a group of teens tore through downtown Louisville sparking dozens of police reports. Hal Heiner leads other Republican candidates for this year’s gubernatorial election, according to a new poll released Tuesday. The former Louisville Metro Council member leads with 28 percent of the vote in a poll conducted by SurveyUSA for The Courier-Journal, WHAS, the Lexington Herald-Leader and WKYT. The poll surveyed 1,917 registered voters. Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer and Matt Bevin tied for second with 20 percent of the vote. Bevin unsuccessfully ran last year as a tea party candidate in the Republican Senate primary. He was defeated by now-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Heiner not only lead in the polls.
