Calling himself an abolitionist, Jon Larson is seeking to shutter the office of state treasurer by being elected to serve in the post. “It won’t get done if anyone else is elected,” he said in an interview Monday with Pure Politics. Scott, clad in a bright blue jumpsuit, was still catching his breath on Monday as he explained his six-point plan for Kentucky’s veterans after gliding to the earth from 3,500 feet. In the pairings for the 2015 women’s NCAA basketball tournament announced Monday evening, the Kentucky Wildcats are seeded second in their region and will face Tennessee State on Friday in opening round play in Lexington. The Louisville Cardinals are a No. 3 seed in the same region and takes on BYU Saturday in Tampa, Florida. Kentucky’s new poet laureate will be freelance writer and teacher who is originally from Harlan County. George Ella Lyon will succeed Frank X Walker, who was appointed by Gov. Steve Beshear in 2013. Lyon has written more than 40 books, including the poetry collections “Mountain,” which won the Lamont Hall Award in 1983, and “Catalpa,” which was named Appalachian Book of the Year in 1993. New polling shows opposition to same sex marriage is growing among Kentucky voters. According to the most recent Bluegrass poll, 57 percent of the registered voters surveyed earlier this month said they don’t support same sex marriage. That’s compared to 50 percent last summer. The poll, which was paid for by the Lexington Herald-Leader, The Courier-Journal, WKYT-TV and WHAS-TV, was released last week ahead of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a challenge to Kentucky’s gay marriage ban.
