Legislature set to consider number of high-profile bills upon return from veto recess

03/22/2015 05:53 PM
A handful of unresolved issues will greet the General Assembly when lawmakers return to Frankfort on Monday, from addressing the state’s heroin epidemic to deciding whether to stop a plummeting gas tax that’s set to create a $250 million budgetary hole in little more than a week. Lawmakers have met in public and private in the final days of a quiet veto recess. While handing out a number of ceremonial pens at public bill signings since the break began, Gov. Steve... Read more

"Fruitful" closed-door meeting boosts lawmakers' confidence on heroin resolution

03/20/2015 10:22 PM
FRANKFORT — Lawmakers hoping to reach a compromise on anti-heroin legislation went behind closed doors Friday after a tense debate on how to punish traffickers. They emerged more than three and a half hours later without an agreement, but the chairmen of the House and Senate judiciary committees left the meeting in high spirits after “fruitful” discussions. Rep. John Tilley and Sen. Whitney Westerfield said they plan to brief their caucuses on progress from the private conference committee meeting over the... Read more

Lawmakers "still talking" about bonds for Ky. Teachers' Retirement System

03/20/2015 07:14 PM
FRANKFORT — When lawmakers adjourned negotiations on a proposal to pump $3.3 billion in bonds into the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System on Friday evening they said progress was made on the negotiations, but no agreement had yet been reached. The House and Senate start off far apart in their approach to the Kentucky Teachers’ Retirement System, which faces nearly $14 billion in unfunded liabilities. Senate Republicans prefer to study the system in the interim and come back to the table... Read more

McConnell taking fight with EPA to states across the nation

03/20/2015 11:47 AM
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is urging governors across the states to defy the Environmental Protection Agency in their request for carbon reduction plans. In a letter sent to all 50 Governors McConnell called on the group to reject the EPA’s proposed regulation aimed at reducing carbon emissions by 30 percent by the year 2030, based on 2005 emissions numbers. The rule is expected to be finalized this summer, and the plan calls on giving flexibility to states to meet the... Read more
A year ago on yesterday, Louisville unwittingly stumbled into weeks of soul-searching on the issues of violence prevention and youth outreach. The catalyst was a string of violence on the evening of March 22, 2014 in downtown Louisville. On that Saturday night, a large group of young people–police estimate about 200–caused several acts of vandalism and violence, starting at Waterfront Park, according to police. A gas station was ransacked, according to police. Cars, sitting at traffic lights, were pummeled; robberies were reported. Police said they received 20 calls for assistance in downtown on a single night. The incidents led to security changes in [...]

A group of Kentucky students has planned to rally on the steps of the state capitol Monday to encourage lawmakers to pass a bill they helped craft–and which has become a victim of the political process. The students want to change the law to allow students to serve on the committees that screen superintendent candidates before school boards make their appointments. The idea, they argue, is to give students a voice. The bill passed the House in a 88-5 vote. But earlier this month, two lawmakers in the Kentucky Senate attached controversial amendments that made the bill, as presented, nearly impossible to pass. “We were surprised. Especially [...]

SEATTLE — Rick Pitino and Louisville are heading to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year. Terry Rozier scored 25 points Sunday night to lift the fourth-seeded Cards to a 66-53 victory over fifth-seeded Northern Iowa in the NCAA Tournament. Montrezl Harrell added 14 for Louisville (26-8), including a couple of game-sealing alley-oop jams on passes from Rozier. The Cardinals will play eighth-seeded North Carolina State on Friday in an East Region that is now missing the top two seeds. The Cardinals packed it in against Northern Iowa’s top scorer, Seth Tuttle, holding him to 14 points and only seven shot attempts. The [...]
