03/15/2015 02:39 PM
Calling the fervor surrounding a letter from 47 Senate Republicans to the Iranian government “selective outrage” and “a bit of a manufactured controversy,” U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended the communiqué as an assertion of Congress’ role in hammering out a nuclear deal with Iran during CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday. McConnell and his GOP colleagues, including potential presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, have faced pointed criticism after sending the letter to Iranian leaders Monday. In... On Monday, 37 Kentucky students will participate in one of several regional Braille competitions happening around the country; it’s the last year students will use the current Braille code before the U.S. aligns its code with all other English speaking countries. “Braille is not a language. Braille is a code,” said Janie Blome, director of Field Services for the American Printing House for the Blind. There are many different Braille codes used throughout the world, she said. At this year’s regional Braille competition, Kentucky students will be using the English Braille American Edition that’s been around for many years, said Blome. “That is a form of the code [...]

What does an A on a report card represent? For most students it’s a mix of homework assignments, class participation, projects, maybe even a little extra credit. But if a student doesn’t complete his or her homework but can master the material, what grade does that student deserve? Principals in five Jefferson County public elementary schools are experimenting with standards-based reporting—in addition to traditional report cards—to help answer this question. The experiment maybe change the way letter grades are granted in the school system. It’s an attempt to give parents and students a clearer picture of whether that student is meeting the individual standards—such as adding whole numbers—necessary [...]
