FRANKFORT — Gov. Steve Beshear signed a bill granting tax incentives for this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championship at Keeneland on Tuesday, and officials hope similar deals will coax the event back to Kentucky in the near future. Keeneland is set to host Lexington’s first ever Breeders’ Cup and the ninth overall in Kentucky Oct. 30-31, and under House Bill 134, all wagering on live races during Thoroughbred event will be exempt from the state’s parimutuel taxes. FLEMINGSBURG — This Saturday marks the 70th anniversary of the death of World War II veteran and Fleming County native Franklin Sousley, who was one of six marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, a moment captured in the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal. WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul’s advisers are preparing to launch a White House bid on April 7. A senior Paul adviser said Tuesday the Kentucky Republican is set to make official his presidential ambitions in Louisville, Kentucky. He then is expected to visit early nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. The adviser demanded anonymity to speak ahead of Paul’s public announcement. If the Kentucky General Assembly does nothing about Kentucky’s dwindling road fund, the state will have to make tough choices about which highway projects to fund, according to the state agency that administers highway construction projects. The fund has been shrinking as receipts from the state gas tax—which is pegged to the average wholesale gas prices in the state—have dropped off as a result of low gas prices. State legislators say finding a fix to the funding problem is a high priority, but leaders in the state House and Senate have blamed each another for not coming up with a solution.
